As i'm quite experience in this, as we go Thailand by driving own car every time!!
This article generally applicable if you want to cross into Thailand overland but I’ll be more specific on Malaysia – Thailand Border Crossing by Car.
Follow this simple steps below:
Step One:
Prepare your car Grant
If you are the one who drive, please make sure you are the car owner
Unless you will need to prepare:
1. Authorization Letter from car owner
2. Copy of the owner’s N.R.I.C.
2. Copy of the owner’s Driving license /Passport
Step Two:
Purchase Compulsory Motor Insurance (CMI) "Thai Car Insurance" before the border
If you go through Bukit Kayu Hitam Border,
you should see several stall / shop lot which written "INSURANCE"
Don't be afraid to stop down,
get yours one as early as possible,
as you go more nearer to "Kastam", the price of insurance is getting higher.
We stop here for Compulsory Motor Insurance (CMI) "Thai Car Insurance"
Choose 9 days insurance for RM15
Step Three:
Get Thailand Immigration White Card (White Card) and car card be prepared
If you are first time to drive in Thailand, advise to buy during purchase "Thai Car Insurance",
they also provide service of filling White Card and "Car Card" (TM2 & TM3),
they will charge per pieces with well printed data.
Thailand Immigration White Card RM 2/piece (TM2), "Car Card" (TM3) RM 5/piece
If you are returned driver, remember to collect extra White Card and "Car Card"(TM2 & TM3 usually staple together) during your previous visit to Thailand custom,
so that you able to fill in these document earlier and you will not get rush and panic upon reaching "Kastam" :D
Summaries on documents that you need:
1. Passport valid for 6 months at-least
2. Vehicle registration card (Grant / VOC), prepare photocopy as well
3. TM6 Immigration form (Arrival/Departure white card)
(get from shop which selling insurance OR get it free from Thai Immigration Counter)
4. TM2 Information of Conveyance form – 2 copies Download
OR get it free from Thai Immigration Counter
5. TM3 Passenger List form – 2 copies. (Only if you’re riding /driving with passenger) Download OR get it free from Thai Immigration Counter
6. Driving license recognized in Thailand
7. (If the vehicle is not on your name)
(a). Authorized letter from the vehicle owner Sample
(b). Copy of the owner’s N.R.I.C.
(c). Copy of the owner’s Driving license / Passport
8. Copy of your road tax – Ensure it is not expired
9. Compulsory Motor Insurance (CMI) (RM 15)
Well, I will go through all the process with you together so that you can pass Thai Immigration in the shortest time.
Car owner to queue in car to
1. Pass Thai border (to chop passport)
2. Attached with TM6 Immigration form (Arrival/Departure white card)
3. TM2 Information of Conveyance form (to chop)
**This flow applicable if you go at peak season. If not, passenger can be in car together.
Passengers to pass Thai border (chop passport)
**This flow applicable if you go at peak season. If not, passenger can be in car together.
Overtime fee will be charged at these hours
Car owner to go to last procedure
Make sure car owner (themselves) come with chopped passport
Last procedure to go is for car registration,
documents to prepare are
1. Car Grant
2. Car owner themselves with chopped passport
3. Chopped TM2 Information of Conveyance form
Pass all the document to officer, you will get
1. 2 copies from them
2. Sign on it (2 sign for each, total 4 sign)
3. Pass back to officer (they will sign on it too)
4. Get back 1 of the copy (to be return when you going back to Malaysia)

**Documents to get ready if you are not the car owner
1. Authorization Letter from car owner
2. Copy of the owner’s N.R.I.C.2. Copy of the owner’s Driving license /Passport
